The Names of the Months

The months are named in Scripture principally as the First, Second…etc, and the word names used such as “Aviv” are more a description of their relation to the agricultural or seasonal cycle. The modern Jewish names of the months, such as “Nisan” were adopted during the time of the Babylonian exile.

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, in the Scriptures the number of the month takes primary significance over any name it may have.

Most but not all of the months do have names mentioned in the Scriptures, however, after the exile to Babylon, many of the month’s names changed, as also did the Hebrew writing style.  These new names were mostly therefore of Babylonian influence and origin but seemed to have survived as the primary names used today. We would prefer to use the scriptural names but have included both to avoid confusion.  The scriptural name (if any) is written first and the other name second. We hope to provide more information on this topic next year.
