The Eighth Month (Bul or Cheshvan)

The name of this month is mentioned at the completion of the 1st Temple in 1Kings 6vs38a; “and in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, the eighth month, the house was completed….”

There are no extra “Moadiem” (appointed times) this month, aside from the Rosh Hodesh, and four Shabbats.

If there are no Moadiem, do not make one up! We see an example of this mentioned in the account of the evil King Yarob’am in 1 Kings 12vs33 “And he made offerings on the altar which he had made at Beyth El on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month which he had devised in his own heart” Read on and see how this kindled the wrath of YHVH! On another occasion during this month, with a similar theme; in Zechariah 1vs1 we read: “In the eighth month, of….. The word of YHVH came to Zekaryah, son of…… saying,….” , “ YHVH was very wroth with your fathers.”And you shall say to them...” Let us not be over zealous in our flesh, but rather humble, awaiting the word of YHVH. Yet by all means zealous in the Spirit for a move of the Ruach Ha’Kodesh in truth.

This month gives us an opportunity to reflect on the past month, which has been full of festivals, and much teaching. After special repentance of sins on Yom Kippur, it is very appropriate to meditate this month on Hebrews 10 vs. 26-31: “For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much more sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing…”

We would hope that we have all entered more deeply into the “rest” of Hashem, and have the opportunity now this month to live that out, as a shadowed foretaste of Yeshuah coming to ‘tabernacle’ with us, and the days that lie beyond that. May YHVH protect us from the hand of Satan that would want to snatch those seeds from our heart, seeds of learning the word during the month of Tishri. (In Israel, in the Northern Hemisphere, the end of the summer harvests, going into autumn, then winter.). Symbolically, we now enter the winter of the cold hardened world, filled with the fruits of the Spirit. May the harvest of these fruits in us sustain us through the harder times that may lie ahead.
